This collection currently focuses on Iridium SBD, from bare transceivers for custom hardware integrations through to RockBLOCK modules, sealed field devices, and the RockBLOCK RTU micro data logger. Choose this route when your application needs to send and receive small, useful payloads beyond terrestrial networks.

 

Devices can send messages up to 340 bytes and receive messages up to 270 bytes, making SBD a good fit for compact data, short commands, and acknowledgements.

Low data satellite messaging is for applications that only need to send small, useful payloads rather than continuous data streams.

In this collection, that usually means deployments sending less than around 10 KB of data per month. Typical examples include sensor readings, status updates, alerts, position reports, fault codes, short commands, and compact telemetry packets.

It's a good fit when the application can be designed around bytes, not kilobytes or megabytes. If you expect to send larger payloads, frequent batches, logs, images, or more than around 10 KB per month, look at our larger message payload devices instead.

Choose a bare Iridium transceiver if you are designing satellite connectivity directly into your own hardware and are ready to manage power, RF, antenna, enclosure, firmware, and certification requirements.

Choose a RockBLOCK module if you want an easier development route with the satellite modem, power handling, antenna options, and host interface already made more accessible.

Choose a sealed RockBLOCK device or the RockBLOCK RTU if you want something closer to field deployment, with the enclosure, antenna, wiring, and application behavior handled for you.

Look at larger message payload devices if your application needs more than compact telemetry, alerts, position reports, or short commands.

As a rule of thumb, low data messaging is usually the better fit below around 10 KB per month. If you expect to send roughly 10-55 KB per month, or you need to send batched sensor data, logs, configuration files, richer diagnostics, or image snippets, an IMT device such as RockBLOCK 9704, RockBLOCK Plus 9704, RockBLOCK Pro, or RockBLOCK Pro OEM may be a better fit.

If your application will frequently go above that, or you need an IP connection rather than message-based data, look at RockREMOTE and other Certus 100 hardware instead.

Yes, if the product includes GNSS or your host system supplies position data.

Low data messaging is often a good fit for tracking because position reports can be very compact. Your application still needs to define how often positions are recorded, when messages are sent, and what other status or sensor data is included.

Not in the strict sense.

In ideal conditions, an already powered SBD device can complete a message session in roughly 10 seconds. That assumes a clear view of the sky, good antenna placement, and a successful session on the first attempt.

However, we wouldn't recommend designing your application around guaranteed 10 second reporting. In real installations, buildings, terrain, vehicle bodywork, ship structures, trees, antenna placement, RF interference, retries, and satellite movement can all affect how quickly a message completes. A restricted view of the sky can extend transmission time from seconds to minutes.

Low data satellite messaging is well suited to telemetry, alerts, status updates, position reports, and commands, but it shouldn't be treated as a fixed interval real time link. For most applications, it's better to design around retries, occasional delays, and sensible back-off behavior.

Most devices in this collection use Iridium Short Burst Data, or SBD.

Depending on the device and service setup, messages can be delivered to your application through the RockBLOCK portal, HTTP POST, email, or Cloudloop Data. Cloudloop can route messages into webhooks, APIs, MQTT, email, cloud services, or other configured destinations.
